A keenly contested and frantic battle saw Fleet Town Vikings narrowly defeated in their first fixture of the new season, in a new division following last seasons promotion. Hook seized the early initiative and went ahead late in the first half with a speculative strike from the left wing. Vikings were on level terms just after the break when Jack Barney’s shot deflected off a Hook defender to leave the keeper wrong footed, but Vikings were undone in exactly the same way when Hook regained their lead midway through the second half. The visitors increased their advantage with a breakaway goal before Aaron Matthews gave the Vikings hope with 3 minutes left, volleying home off the post after Fareed Hakeem-Habeeds shot had cannoned off a defender. Despite a frantic end, Vikings were unable to capitalise further and United left Oakley Park with the three points, but knowing they had been pushed all the way by the newly promoted Vikings.
