Both sides started well with equal chances to open the scoring as Chris twice found himself in the box to have a go, the 2nd effort being the closest as his shot flashed across the face of goal.
Then it was Widbrook who tested our defence as a bad pass allowed the striker in but his shot went just wide, then a second shot on target was well saved by Dan Mac in goal. But it was Fleet who pinched the opener, Dan H with a run into the box and his shot was only palmed by the keeper for Chris to tap home for 1-0. But within minutes the game was level at 1-1 as the ultra quick striker was in to find the far left corner. Fleet were then lucky not to go behind as confusion in the defence opened a gap for their striker but he fortunately hit the post. Fleet were now a little under the cosh as Widbrook closed down and worked harder than Fleet. They survived this spell and won a free kick on the edge of the box, Kai going just inches wide of the far post. Now it was Fleet who applied some pressure and it paid off, Danny with a classy finish from the edge of the box to the bottom left corner for a 2-1 lead.
Half Time 2 v 1
Fleet came out very positive in the second half, both Jamie and Olly going very close. Dominating the game now and Fleet should of had a stonewall penalty, Mathew jinked into the box and just as he squared up to shoot he was clearly taken out from behind but the Ref was having none of it. With Fleet all over Widbrook, Myles put in a superb cross behind the defensive line to meet Mathew on the half volley but it went just the wrong side of the post. Fleet deservedly went further ahead as Dan H put in a fierce cross and it rebounded to Lewis and he almost punctured the net for 3-1.
Not for the first time, Fleet couldn’t put the game to bed and allowed their opponents back in. Under pressure for a long spell when all that was needed was putting their laces through the ball to clear but Fleet allowed a strike at goal and it was 3-2. Almost against the run of play, Fleet produced a quality move as Jamie threaded the ball through a crowded defence and Mathew slotted home for 4-2. But in typical cup tie fashion, Widbrook immediately closed the deficit to 4-3. The game was now on a knife edge as Widbrook twice flashed the ball across the face of goal. Then the most dramatic last 5 minutes unfolded as a scramble between Dan Mac, Maxim and their striker found him coming out with the ball to tap home for 4-4. A minute or two to go and Danny chased down a long ball forward to somehow finish from some distance in to the far right hand corner to lead 5-4. But it didn’t end there… With literally the last kick of the ball, Widbrook made it 5-5 with a great shot from outside the box and send the tie in to penalties.
Full Time 5-5
With 4 convincing spot kicks from Mathew, Danny, Ralph & Maxim, along with 2 superb saves from Dan Mac saw Fleet through 4-2 on penalties and in to the 3rd Round.
