Fleet Town 1 v 2 Botley (Hampshire Cup)

Hampshire Cup 1st Round

Fleet started the game the more assertive and creative with good build up play but lacked the clinical finish it deserved. Having put the defence under pressure, Dan E scuffed an easy chance wide.
Ben N robbed his opposite number and with a neat through ball, Lewis went inches wide. Just as Fleet started dominate, Mathew’s stray midfield pass allowed Botley to counter attack and go 0-1 ahead. Deservedly, Botley’s lead was short lived as Ben N released Dan E into space down the right and he curled in a pin point cross that landed at the feet of Lewis. No surprises as Lewis stuck the ball away with ease and level the score 1-1. Fleet continued to press, Chris picked up a loose ball in the box and as he turned was tripped for a stone-wall penalty. Fully expecting to go 2-1 up, Dan E stepped up but his spot kick was well saved. Fleet never peeked again from here on in, both sides seemed content for the half to fizzle out.

Half Time 1 v 1

Despite the slope being in Fleet’s favour, Botley became the more attacking side. Fleet had lost all build up play, no invention through passing and started to play the long ball over the top which both Botley centre backs dealt with. A number of needless free kicks were soon going to pay off for Botley as Fleet looked edgy and unsure at the back. One such free kick on the edge of the box was push saved onto the bar by Alex, but Fleet stood still as they watched Botley tap home with ease for a 1-2 lead. Unfortunately, Fleet never truly amounted a response and barely troubled the Botley keeper for the remainder of the game. Lewis nearly threw the game into extra time but as he ran through, pressure from the defender made him send his shot just over the bar.
