Colts U17s Triumph In The SPL Senior Cup

Our U17s squad reached the SPL Senior cup final for the second year running this season. The match was held on Sunday 8th May at Godalming FC against Worplesdon Hurricanes who have not been beaten all season! So we were expecting a competitive and tough game. However, having finished second in the league this season, the lads were up for a challenge and determined to finish on a high. Team spirit was strong and their attitude was positive from the off. Playing in the heat was no easy task but we showed great energy from the start. Worplesdon were a well organised team, quick on the break and scored a zinger of a goal from the edge of the box, leaving our keeper with no chance. Fleet dug in and battled hard, creating several chances in the first half but failed to convert before half time.

However, Fleet came out fighting after the half time break and kept pressing and were rewarded with a quick equaliser from Billy Smith. Soon afterwards, Mike Stapelberg scored a powerful and well placed header from a corner. Fleet took complete control and scored a third outstanding team goal with a perfect pass from James Vass up to Michael Colfer who took on two defenders and let fly and unstoppable shot to beat the goalkeeper. 3-1 up and looking comfortable but in true cup tie fashion there was another twist in the tale. An unexpected 8 minutes !!! into extra time, Worplesdon scored from a free kick outside the box and piled the pressure on. Fleet held firm and saw out the win 3-2. A well deserved victory in testing conditions. Well done to all the lads, each player giving their all. A proud moment for the club and team.
